The Rwandan Defence Forces released a statement that a Rwandan soldier opened fire in a bar Wednesday and killed five civilians in a south-western town. Authorities are investigating the motive behind a shooting that took place during the morning.

The shooter has been identified as 39-year-old Sergeant Lauben luckily, though it is not yet clear how the incident came about. The Rwandan army says it is investigating in order to understand the cause of the unfortunate incident.

“RDF has arrested the suspect and will take necessary legal action against him,” the East African country’s military said in a statement.

In 2020, six Rwandan soldiers were arrested for allegedly raping and beating civilians during the Covid pandemic lockdown in the Kangondo slum in the capital Kigali.
