Afrobeats superstar Davido has urged black Americans against relocating to Nigeria, pointing to the country’s challenging economic conditions. His comments come amid speculation that some black Americans are considering leaving the United States following Donald Trump’s recent electoral victory, driven by concerns about unfavorable policies.
Speaking on The Big Homies House podcast, the globally acclaimed artist painted a candid picture of Nigeria’s struggles, describing the economy as being in disarray. He highlighted issues like weak leadership, a depreciating exchange rate, and high oil prices, which have significantly impacted the nation’s economic stability.
“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” Davido stated, emphasizing the daily struggles Nigerians face. He expressed frustration with the paradox of an oil-producing country paying more for fuel than nations that import it. “Imagine the country that produces oil, paying more for it than a country importing oil,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Davido acknowledged the vital role of Africa’s entertainment industry in transforming the continent’s global image. He noted that entertainment has been one of the few bright spots in Africa’s narrative, showcasing the creativity and talent of its people. “Regardless, entertainment is one of the things that has made Africa look good. We do not have the best leader, that is a fact,” he added.
Davido also reflected on his personal efforts as an ambassador for Nigeria, balancing the need to highlight the country’s positives while being honest about its flaws.
