The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly opposed the possibility of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

This firm stance comes amid endorsements from groups like the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, which proposed Seyi Tinubu as a viable candidate. However, Lagos PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode has dismissed these endorsements outright, asserting, “Lagos will not serve him.”

Amode expressed criticism of treating governance as a family inheritance, warning that any attempt to impose Seyi Tinubu as governor would face significant resistance from Lagosians.

“Governorship is not a gift,” Amode stated in a recent interview with The Punch, underscoring that Lagosians had already voiced their disapproval of the Tinubu political dynasty by voting against President Bola Tinubu during the last presidential election.

He reiterated that this opposition reflects the broader sentiment among Lagos residents, signaling that any governorship ambitions by Seyi Tinubu would likely be rejected at the polls.

Why This Matters

The PDP’s opposition highlights a growing resistance to political dynasties in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State, where governance is increasingly being scrutinized as a democratic rather than hereditary right. As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape in Lagos is expected to intensify, with voters and parties vying to redefine the state’s leadership trajectory.
