A man identified as Fatai Hamzat was discovered dead in his apartment on Oremeji Street, Ijeun Tuntun, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The tragic incident was confirmed by the Ogun State Police Command on Saturday.
Hamzat’s lifeless body was found around 7 a.m. on Friday after neighbors grew suspicious when his door remained locked from the inside. According to a wireless message obtained by PUNCH Online, a neighbor recounted, “I noticed his motorcycle parked in the compound and went to check on him, but the door was locked. Repeated knocks went unanswered.”
Neighbors, including one identified as Ogunsola, forced open a window and discovered Hamzat hanging from a rope tied to his ceiling fan.
Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed that the body was moved to a hospital morgue for autopsy, while an investigation is ongoing.
This incident adds to a growing list of suicides in Ogun State. On October 18, 2024, a man named Dada Adesonye was found hanging from a tree in Afami, Imasayi, Yewa North Local Government Area. His body was discovered early in the morning by a local worker.
Similarly, on August 29, 2024, a 32-year-old man, Olúwaṣeun Shorinola, was found hanging in his apartment in the Kemta area of Abeokuta by his wife.
These repeated incidents have sparked widespread concern about the rising number of suicides in Ogun State, prompting calls for mental health awareness and support within the community.
