The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended Osang Usie Otukpa, a Nigerian national accused of orchestrating a cryptocurrency scam that defrauded 139 Australians of $8 million. The suspect was taken into custody at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos upon his return from the United States.
In a statement issued by Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, it was revealed that Otukpa operated under multiple aliases, including Ford Thompson, Oscar Donald Tyler, Michael Haye, Jose Vitto, and Kristin Davidson, to perpetrate the fraudulent scheme. His actions centered on a deceptive cryptocurrency investment platform named Liquid Asset Group, which he promoted extensively through social media channels to lure unsuspecting investors.
The victims of the scam were persuaded to invest in the platform, only to suffer significant financial losses. According to the EFCC, proceeds from the fraudulent activities were funneled into Otukpa’s bank accounts via a global cryptocurrency exchange platform.
“Operatives of the EFCC have arrested a suspected online fraudster, Osang Usie Otukpa, for allegedly duping 139 Australians to the tune of AUD 8 million,” the statement read. It added that the suspect was apprehended during a stakeout at the airport upon his arrival on December 6, 2024.
Investigations are ongoing, and Otukpa is expected to face formal charges in court once the process is complete. The EFCC emphasized its commitment to combating cybercrime and restoring public trust in financial systems, both locally and globally.
This case serves as a reminder of the growing prevalence of online financial scams and the importance of vigilance when investing in cryptocurrency platforms. Authorities continue to urge individuals to verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities and remain cautious of schemes that appear too good to be true.
