The UK-born politician, of Nigerian descent, appealed to the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom for help during her 2010 campaign for a parliamentary seat in Dulwich and West Norwood.
In a campaign message circulated at the time, Badenoch emphasized her Nigerian roots, urging fellow Nigerians to rally behind her bid for office. “I need your help,” she wrote. “A Nigerian in parliament winning purely on merit… will be amazing.” She promised to use her platform to improve Nigeria’s image on the global stage, a pledge that resonated with many.
However, since securing her position in British politics, Badenoch’s relationship with her heritage has sparked controversy. Critics have accused her of leveraging her Nigerian background when convenient while distancing herself when it suits her political ambitions.

Badenoch’s remarks during her 2022 bid to succeed former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson reignited debate about her views on Nigeria. Referencing her upbringing, she described witnessing political corruption and environmental degradation in Nigeria. She remarked, “I grew up in Nigeria, and I saw firsthand what happens when politicians are in it for themselves, when they use public money as their private piggy banks.”
Her statements drew mixed reactions, with some applauding her honesty while others viewed her comments as an attempt to disparage her roots. Nigerians in the diaspora, including notable figures like former presidential aide Reno Omokri, accused her of adopting a selective approach to her heritage. Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue, defended Nigeria’s resilience while acknowledging Badenoch’s right to her opinion. He emphasized that no individual could diminish the value of the country or its people.
In response to the backlash, Badenoch’s spokesperson maintained her commitment to transparency and her leadership principles, stating, “She tells the truth. She tells it like it is. She stands by what she says.”
