A tragic incident has unfolded in the Ijoka area of Akure, Ondo State, where a man died after setting himself and his estranged wife on fire. The couple, married for ten years and parents to two children, had reportedly been separated due to unresolved marital issues.
According to a statement from the Ondo State Police Command, the man had been pleading with his wife to reconcile, but she refused. On the day of the incident, he invited her to his house under the pretense of collecting an item. When she arrived, he locked the door, poured petrol over both of them, and ignited the fire using a lighter.
Police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the details, stating, “The deceased asked his wife to come over and collect a wardrobe. When she arrived, he began threatening to kill himself but later locked the door so that both of them would die together. Using fuel and a lighter, he set himself and the woman ablaze.”
The man died at the scene, while the wife, who suffered severe burns, was rushed to the hospital and is currently receiving treatment. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
