In a surprise political moment, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky said he was proposing Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Paul, in a social media post, touted Musk’s potential ability to disrupt traditional political Washington.
The Constitution of the United States doesn’t say he has to be an actual member of Congress at such time, though such an example would be unheard of, unprecedented. Paul added, “Nothing would shake the swamp like picking Elon Musk.think about it.nothing’s impossible”.
This suggestion came as Musk has recently weighed into the public policy debate, notably on opposition to a bipartisan bill to fund the government,.
Using his platform on X, formerly Twitter, Musk rallied public opinion against the bill, which was defeated and nearly shut down the federal government.
Some Republican lawmakers, such as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, have voiced support for a Musk candidacy, but the idea has not taken hold within the GOP.
Critics say Musk’s broad commitments to his various enterprises would get in the way of his performing the heavy lifting required by the Speaker role.
