In the wake of Mozambique’s recent political turmoil, a Nigerian businessman residing in Maputo, Akinola Olunloyo, has called upon President Bola Tinubu to leverage his influence within the African Union to help restore peace and stability in the country.

The unrest follows the confirmation of the ruling party Frelimo’s victory in the October 9 elections. Olunloyo alleges that the opposition party, Podemos, led by candidate Venâncio Mondlane, has incited violence, leading to loss of life, destruction of businesses, and targeted attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

Having lived in Maputo for over 13 years, Olunloyo reports that many Nigerians are now stranded without means of escape. He emphasizes the urgency of immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life and to ensure the safety of Nigerians in Mozambique.

Olunloyo suggests several actions for the Nigerian government, including the evacuation of Nigerian citizens, diplomatic engagement with the Mozambican government to demand protection for Nigerians, and pressing for an immediate de-escalation of violence. He also calls on regional bodies and the African Union to hold Podemos and Mondlane accountable for their alleged roles in inciting violence and destabilizing the country.

The situation remains tense, with attacks on foreigners and their businesses reportedly fueled by beliefs that the government benefits from foreign nationals. As the crisis unfolds, the Nigerian community in Mozambique awaits decisive action to ensure their safety and well-being.
