The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a day-old baby abandoned along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind the uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape. According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the rescue occurred on January 3, 2025, around 10:00 am, after a distress call was received by operatives from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section (JWC).
The baby, found wrapped in cloth, was immediately taken to the Mpape Primary Health Care Center, where medical personnel confirmed the infant’s stable condition. Acting on a tip-off from the community, the police apprehended the baby’s mother, Khadija Ali. During interrogation, Ali admitted to abandoning the child, citing her inability to provide care after her husband left her following the birth.
The FCT Police Command strongly condemned the act of child abandonment and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the most vulnerable members of society. SP Adeh stated, “The rescued baby will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for appropriate care, while the mother will be prosecuted under sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 after investigations are concluded.”
The command extended its gratitude to the public for their cooperation and encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or emergencies through its emergency lines:
