President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the Eastern Rail Line, a project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Nigeria’s eastern regions and other parts of the country. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revitalize the nation’s infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.
The Eastern Rail Line, which spans from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, traverses several states, including Rivers, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Borno. Its completion is expected to facilitate the efficient movement of goods and passengers, thereby boosting trade and commerce across these regions.
In recent years, the project has faced challenges, including funding constraints and delays in execution. Notably, in September 2023, the Federal Government expressed concerns over the slow pace of work by the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) on the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway. The Minister of Transportation at the time, Sen. Saidu Alkali, highlighted the need for expedited efforts to meet project timelines.
President Tinubu’s renewed commitment to this project underscores the administration’s focus on infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic revitalization. By prioritizing the completion of the Eastern Rail Line, the government aims to enhance regional integration, create employment opportunities, and improve the overall standard of living for Nigerians.
