Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that individuals responsible for the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, face legal prosecution. The incident, which occurred during a children’s funfair on December 18, 2024, resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children.
During the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers, Governor Makinde addressed appeals for leniency, emphasizing that the rule of law must prevail in Oyo State. He stated, “Even if nobody is held accountable elsewhere, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail.” The governor acknowledged that while the judiciary may grant bail to suspects, the legal process must proceed without interference.
The stampede occurred during a Christmas charity program organized by Prophetess Naomi Ogunseyi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat. Both Ogunseyi and Hamzat, along with the principal of the school, have been remanded in custody over the incident.
Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “No life is bigger than any other life.” He assured that under his administration, justice would be served to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
The governor also addressed security concerns in the state, noting challenges from bandits entering from northwestern regions. He expressed gratitude to security personnel for their efforts and reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
This stance underscores the Oyo State government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served for the victims of the Ibadan stampede.
