The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. Chelle, a 47-year-old former Malian international, brings a wealth of experience from his playing and coaching career in France and Africa.

Born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Chelle enjoyed a successful playing career as a center-back with French clubs including Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. He earned five caps for the Mali national team between 2004 and 2006.

Transitioning into coaching, Chelle managed French clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, and Boulogne. In 2022, he took the helm of the Mali national team, leading them to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite his efforts, he was dismissed in June 2024 following a draw against Madagascar in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Chelle’s appointment comes after the NFF’s extensive search for a foreign coach to lead the Super Eagles, following the resignation of former coach Finidi George. His familiarity with African football and recent international experience are expected to be valuable assets as he prepares the team for upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the 2026 World Cup campaign.

The NFF expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to revitalize the Super Eagles, aiming to restore Nigeria’s dominance in African football. Chelle is anticipated to commence his duties immediately, focusing on team selection and strategy ahead of crucial fixtures.

This appointment marks a new chapter for Nigerian football, with stakeholders and fans hopeful that Chelle’s leadership will usher in a period of success and stability for the national team.
