The Oyo State legal team has opposed the bail applications for Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM, both implicated in the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The incident, which occurred during a children’s funfair on December 18, 2024, resulted in the deaths of 35 minors.
During a recent court session at the Iyaganku Chief Magistrate Court, the state’s legal representatives argued against granting bail to the accused, citing the severity of the charges, which include conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities. The court had previously ordered the remand of Silekunola, Hamzat, and the school’s principal, Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, at Agodi Correctional Centre, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The defense counsel for the accused had sought bail, emphasizing their clients’ longstanding commitment to community service and lack of prior criminal records. However, the prosecution maintained that releasing the suspects could impede ongoing investigations and potentially lead to public unrest, given the high-profile nature of the case.
The court has adjourned the matter to January 13, 2025, for further deliberation, pending the DPP’s advice. The tragic event has sparked widespread debate, with various groups calling for justice for the victims while others advocate for leniency, highlighting the philanthropic intentions behind the ill-fated event.
As the legal proceedings continue, the Oyo State government reiterates its commitment to ensuring that justice is served, emphasizing the need for accountability to prevent such tragedies in the future.
