On January 15, 2025, Nigeria commemorated the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, honoring military personnel who have sacrificed their lives for the nation’s unity and security. President Bola Tinubu, in a message shared on his official X handle, lauded the bravery of the armed forces and emphasized the nation’s need for peace, urging citizens to “eschew violence and divisive tendencies for a peaceful and prosperous nation.”
In Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu at the National Arcade for the wreath-laying ceremony. The event featured dignitaries including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and various ministers and service chiefs. The ceremony included prayers, a minute of silence, and the symbolic release of white pigeons to signify peace.
State governors across Nigeria also participated in similar ceremonies, paying tribute to the fallen heroes and pledging support for their families. For instance, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu saluted serving military officers and honored those who had fallen, recognizing their gallantry in protecting the nation.
In a significant gesture of support, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Initiative, distributed N427.75 million to families of fallen Nigerian Armed Forces heroes. Each of the 1,709 widows and orphans received N250,000 to assist in starting or expanding small businesses, aiming to enhance their economic stability. During the presentation, Mrs. Tinubu acknowledged the strength and resilience of the beneficiaries, stating, “You have shown extraordinary courage in the face of adversity, and we are here to offer a helping hand as you chart a new path forward.”
These collective efforts underscore the nation’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of its military personnel and providing tangible support to the families they left behind, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility among Nigerians.
