The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced that the Federal Government is ready to welcome Nigerians deported from the United States. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Corporate Affairs, stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is leading this effort. He also mentioned that an inter-agency committee has been established to manage potential mass deportations. This committee includes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Recent reports indicate that approximately 3,690 Nigerians in the U.S. are facing deportation as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. A document from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reveals that, as of November 24, 2024, there are over 1.4 million non-citizens with final removal orders. While Mexico and El Salvador have the highest numbers, Nigeria is also significantly affected.

Despite these figures, Balogun emphasized that NiDCOM is not currently aware of any Nigerians in the U.S. being processed for deportation.

In response to these developments, the Federal Government has taken proactive measures to ensure the safe return and reintegration of deported citizens. The inter-agency committee aims to provide support and resources to help returnees resettle and reintegrate into Nigerian society.

This situation underscores the importance of adhering to immigration laws and regulations. Nigerians are advised to stay informed about international policies and to seek legal avenues for migration.
