Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has firmly rejected her recent six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate, declaring it “illegal” and asserting her continued legitimacy as a senator.

The suspension, enacted on March 6, 2025, followed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The Senate’s Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions Committee recommended the suspension, citing violations of Senate rules.

In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan issued a statement condemning the suspension as unjust and a violation of natural justice, fairness, and equity. She emphasized that the suspension does not strip her of her legitimacy as a senator and vowed to continue serving her constituents and country.

The Senate’s decision also includes the withdrawal of her salary, allowances, security details, and the closure of her office during the suspension period. Akpoti-Uduaghan was escorted out of the chamber by the sergeant-at-arms following the announcement.

This development has sparked discussions on gender representation and the handling of sexual harassment allegations within Nigerian politics. Critics argue that the suspension may deter other victims from coming forward.

Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against Senate President Akpabio, seeking damages for the alleged harassment. She remains resolute in her stance, stating that she will continue to serve her constituents despite the suspension.

As this situation unfolds, it highlights the challenges faced by women in Nigerian politics and raises questions about the Senate’s internal processes for addressing such serious allegations.
