Former Presidential Spokesperson Doyin Okupe Passes Away at 72

    Dr. Doyin Okupe, a prominent Nigerian physician and politician, has died at the age of 72. He was born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Nigeria. ​

    Okupe began his education at St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta, Lagos, and attended Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos, for his secondary education. He earned a medical degree from the University of Ibadan. ​

    In his medical career, Okupe worked at St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos before co-founding the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Obalende, Lagos. He served as the Managing Director of the center. ​

    Okupe transitioned into politics during the Second Nigerian Republic, running for a House of j seat under the National Party of Nigeria in 1983. He later became the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention during the Third Nigerian Republic. He was appointed Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and later served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. ​

    In recent years, Okupe faced health challenges, including a prostate cancer diagnosis 16 years ago. Despite these challenges, he remained active in the political arena, notably serving as the Director-General of the Labour Party’s presidential campaign in 2023. ​

    Okupe’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigerian politics, as he was known for his dedication to public service and his contributions to the nation’s political discourse.
