President John Mahama of Ghana visited Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on March 27, 2025. This was Mahama’s first official visit to Nigeria since taking office in January.
During the meeting, Mahama thanked Tinubu for attending his inauguration in Accra. He also shared updates on his recent talks with military leaders from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Mahama explained that these talks focused on peace and security across West Africa. As the new head of ECOWAS, he said his goal is to rebuild trust with these countries and keep the region stable.

Asked the significance of his visit, the Ghanaian president said: “I came to thank him for the honour done me during my inauguration.
“But also to brief him on the visits to the Sahelian countries – Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – and to bring him up to date with some of the issues and to discuss with him.
“As ECOWAS (the Economic Community of West African States) chairman, its my duty to come and brief him on the some of the concerns that were raised there, so that we continue to dialogue with those other countries.
President Tinubu welcomed Mahama’s visit and praised him for trying to reconnect with countries that have faced political unrest. He said that cooperation among West African nations is key to solving common problems like terrorism and poverty. Tinubu also stressed the need to create more opportunities for young people in the region.
Both leaders agreed that strong partnerships and regular talks will help protect peace and improve lives in West Africa. Their meeting showed a shared commitment to working together for a safer and more united region.
