Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged school officials to show fairness and understanding toward nursing students in Delta State who were queried for a viral chant during her recent visit.
The incident happened on March 25, 2025, during an event at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba. Students from the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences were seen in a video singing a playful version of a welcome song as they greeted the First Lady and her host, the First Lady of Delta State. The chant quickly spread on social media, drawing mixed reactions.
After the video went viral, some students received formal queries from the college’s management. This move raised concerns, especially from the public, about whether the response was too harsh.
In a statement shared by her office, Senator Tinubu said it is important for institutions to maintain discipline, but also to understand that students often show excitement in lively and harmless ways. She urged the college to handle the matter with care, keeping the students’ futures in mind.
The First Lady explained that her visit was focused on supporting midwives and healthcare workers, with the goal of reducing deaths among mothers and newborns in Nigeria. She thanked the Delta State Government, nurses, midwives, and student nurses for the warm welcome and high energy at the event.
Senator Tinubu expressed trust in the school’s ability to resolve the issue fairly, saying that young people deserve a safe space to learn, grow, and express themselves—without fear of being punished for showing joy.
