Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, officially taking the throne nearly two years after the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. The ceremony took place in Oyo Town and was attended by traditional rulers, political leaders, and members of the public.
Born on July 17, 1975, Oba Owoade hails from the royal Owoade-Agunloye family and is a direct descendant of Alaafin Atiba. He attended Baptist High School in Saki before studying Mechanical Engineering at The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro and The Polytechnic, Ibadan. He later moved to the United Kingdom, where he earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Before becoming king, Oba Owoade gained work experience in both Nigeria and abroad. He held roles at the Nigeria Gas Company and Oceanic Bank, and later worked as a project coordinator in Canada. He is also a certified Project Manager.
His journey to the throne was not without challenges. The selection process faced legal and political delays. However, on January 10, 2025, the state governor gave official approval, and the staff of office was presented three days later.
The coronation was a colorful event that reflected the deep cultural heritage of the Oyo people. Dignitaries from across Nigeria came to witness the occasion, which many described as a proud moment for the Yoruba community.
During his speech, Oba Owoade called for peace, unity, and moderation. He urged his people to work together to promote growth and stability across the region.
