Burkina Faso’s President Questions Democracy, Says Country Is in a Revolutionary Phase

Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has declared that the country is not following a democratic system but is instead undergoing what he called a “popular and progressive revolution.” He made this known during a flag-raising ceremony held at the Koulouba Palace.

Traoré questioned the link between democracy and development, stating that no country has truly developed under democracy. According to him, democracy is not the starting point of progress but only the result of it. He believes Burkina Faso must go through a different path to achieve lasting change.

The president said the country is in a critical phase that requires discipline, order, and unity. He argued that unlimited freedom of speech and behavior can lead to confusion and conflict, and that people need guidance during this transitional period.

Since taking power in September 2022, Traoré has focused on self-reliance and national rebuilding. His leadership style has drawn comparisons to that of former president Thomas Sankara, who was known for bold reforms and anti-colonial views.

Traoré’s message suggests a shift from traditional democratic values toward a model based on national control, order, and strong leadership. He maintains that this is necessary to address the country’s challenges and steer it toward true development.
