Yusuf Alabi, the 15-year-old boy who stood in front of Peter Obi’s convoy during a campaign rally in Lagos, has been freed after spending over three months in detention. His release came following a ruling by a Magistrate Court in Apapa, Lagos.

Alabi was arrested shortly after the widely shared moment during the presidential campaign trail. Despite the peaceful nature of the incident, he was held in custody without trial, sparking concern among citizens and rights groups who called for his immediate release.

Legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions eventually led to his discharge, ending what many described as an unnecessary and prolonged detention of a minor.

Peter Obi, who had earlier acknowledged Alabi’s gesture during the campaign, voiced his concern about the boy’s continued detention and urged for justice to prevail.

The boy’s release was welcomed by human rights activists, child advocacy groups, and members of the public. Many said the case highlighted the urgent need for reform in how minors are treated in the justice system.

Yusuf’s family expressed relief and gratitude following the court’s decision. His supporters say the incident is a reminder of the importance of fairness, especially when dealing with young people caught up in the legal process.
