Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first Mass as the head of the Catholic Church on Friday, inside the iconic Sistine Chapel at the Vatican.

The ceremony, held beneath Michelangelo’s famous ceiling paintings, was filled with prayer, chants, and reflection. Dressed in white and gold vestments, the pope spoke calmly and clearly, urging global leaders and everyday people to “lead with mercy, not might.”

He was joined by cardinals, bishops, and Vatican staff in the quiet, sacred space. The Mass was broadcast to millions around the world.

“Power means nothing without love,” Pope Leo XIV said during his homily. “True leadership is shown in how we treat the weak.”

His message focused on humility, forgiveness, and service — three values he says the world must embrace now more than ever. He also asked the Church to be a “shelter, not a wall,” welcoming those who have lost faith or feel cast aside.

The new pope’s gentle tone and simple words touched many. Some clergy were seen wiping tears during the service, which lasted just over an hour.

Earlier this week, white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signaling that the conclave of cardinals had elected a new pope. Cardinal Robert Francis of the United States was chosen and took the name Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American to lead the Catholic Church.

Following his election, he gave a short speech on unity and compassion, saying he wanted the Church to walk with the poor and the hurting.

Friday’s Mass marked his first formal act as pope. It also set the tone for what many expect to be a humble and people-focused leadership.

The Vatican has not released details of the pope’s next official events, but sources say he will soon visit hospitals and meet leaders of other faiths.

As the Church begins this new chapter, many are watching Pope Leo XIV closely, hopeful that his quiet strength and focus on mercy will guide the world through uncertain times.
