A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 27, 2025, to deliver its final judgment on the case filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against her suspension by the Kogi State All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmaker, who represents Kogi Central, is challenging her suspension from the party, calling it unlawful, politically motivated, and an attempt to silence her.
During the court session on Monday, both parties came out with their written arguments. Natasha’s counsel argued that the APC in Kogi State never had authority to suspend her without due process. Her suspension infringed on her rights as a party member and even as an elected senator, they said.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan made headlines in late 2023 after defeating the APC’s candidate in a fiercely contested Senate election. Following her victory, tensions rose between her and the party leadership in Kogi. In April 2025, the Kogi APC announced her suspension over what it called “anti-party activities,” a move that sparked backlash across the state.
Natasha, known for her bold politics and grassroots appeal, denied all the allegations and insisted her suspension was part of a larger plan to undermine her influence.
Her legal team before the court also submitted that only the national leadership of the party has the power to discipline a sitting senator and never the chapter at the state level. She asked the court to declare the suspension invalid and to halt the APC from making any further actions against her.
On the other side, lawyers for the Kogi APC argued in defense that the suspension was made following internal procedures. According to them, her actions were a breach of party loyalty and discipline.
The court will deliver its judgment on June 27, 2025, as declared by Justice Inyang Ekwo after listening to both sides.
This case is watched closely by political observers and supporters across Nigeria. Many believe that the outcome of this case may set a precedent for how political parties treat elected members who challenge internal power structures.
If the court decides in her favor, it might consolidate Natasha’s position within the APC and enhance her burgeoning reputation as a fearless political voice. If the court decides against her, it might further taint her relationship with the party and impact her future in politics.
