England national team manager Thomas Tuchel effected significant squad rotations before the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier, leaving out Phil Foden and recalling Harry Maguire and Ivan Toney.
Regular England international Foden was left out of the team due to recent form and concerns around match fitness. Tuchel did not comment further but implied that the selection was a tactical one depending on where individuals are at in terms of performance.
In contrast, Harry Maguire, who has come under tremendous scrutiny in the past seasons, has been rewarded with a selection after his rich run of form at Manchester United. Tuchel described Maguire as “reliable” and added that the experience is needed for games like these.
In a surprising inclusion, Ivan Toney, who plays for Saudi Arabia, was included in the squad. Toney had not represented England since moving to the Saudi Pro League but has made an impact with his consistent goal-scoring. Tuchel was impressed with his “sharpness and physical condition” and believes he can make an impact for the attack.
Tuchel also called in some youth players and gave the impression that he wants a combination of experience and youth. He stated, “Every single player in this squad earned their place. The idea is to qualify early and gain momentum.”
England has a forthcoming qualifier against North Macedonia. England is looking at the match as a must-win as the team wants to stay atop of their group.
Fans and experts have reacted hotly to Foden being omitted, with some calling it bold and others criticizing the choice. However, Tuchel justified the act and called for patience in the process.
This will be Tuchel’s third game in charge of England after taking over from Gareth Southgate. He has won both games so far, and the pressure is on as the qualifiers continue.
