A palace elder at the Alaafin of Oyo palace has described the late king as not just a king of Oyo but a king who commands global influence.
Speaking at a cultural event in Oyo Town, the elder testified that Alaafin’s authority and influence stretched way beyond Nigeria or even the borders of Oyo State. According to him, the monastery of the Alaafin enjoyed respect and authority on a global scale due to his capacity to safeguard Yoruba culture and bring peace.
“Alaafin was not just our king,” said the old man. “He was a world king, a man of royal power, wisdom, and unification. Wherever he went, people recognized his power.”
He noted that the majority of Yoruba descendants in the diaspora saw the Alaafin as spiritual father and cultural leader. From Cuba to Brazil, Trinidad to the United States, Alaafin’s influence was deeply felt among people practicing Yoruba traditions.
The ceremony was conducted to memorialize the Alaafin, whose passing in 2022 left a massive gap in Yoruba leadership. The local leaders, chiefs in the palace, and members of the royal family were present. They addressed the Alaafin’s diplomatic position, conflict resolution, and cultural background.
The elder also disclosed that the Alaafin’s voice was worth something in national politics and regional peace talks. His palace was visited regularly by presidents, governors, scholars, and foreign dignitaries who wanted his advice or assistance.
“Even in matters beyond tradition, his voice was heavy,” the elder said. “He was the people’s voice, and leaders listened.”
The remarks follow the Oyo Kingdom’s efforts to select a new Alaafin, a decision that has gripped every corner of Yorubaland and even beyond. The new Alaafin, officials at the palace explained, has to be someone who is aware of the weight of the crown and the responsibilities attached to it.
For the moment, the memory of the late Alaafin lives on, not just in Oyo, but in the hearts of Yoruba persons everywhere in the world who still cherish his name and memory.
