The Defence Secretary of Britain has acknowledged that the UK is “lost the control” on its borders prompting a new discussion about the issue of immigration and security.
The announcement was made in a television interview during which the minister claimed that the current system was not effective. He blamed the weak enforcement system and increasing illegal crossings for the escalating problem.
The Defense Secretary stated that a lot of people are arriving on small vessels, and the numbers continue to increase. The Secretary also stated that the system is in need of an overhaul from top to bottom not just minor adjustments.
He also said that a lot of border officers feel helpless having limited resources to block illegal entry. He warned that this can result in long-term risk when left unchecked.
The comments come when pressure is mounting upon the authorities to limit the flow of people. Recent data show a significant increase in people who arrive with no proper documentation, especially through the sea.
The government has been blamed by critics for not taking enough action. Some claim that poor plans and ineffective rules can lead to widespread abuse. Others believe that delays in the processing of asylum applications are making matters worse.
The Defense Secretary stated that the country requires more stringent laws and speedier processing. He also called for greater collaboration with other countries to stop smugglers and stop more sea deaths.
He emphasized that security of the nation must be top of the list. If this situation continues to be a problem, the public’s confidence in the system could be destroyed completely.
The declaration has fuelled the debate over immigration lawmakers are now calling for immediate actions. Some are urging more assistance from the military, while others demand stricter visa regulations.
The government claims to be developing new plans that include faster deportations as well as stricter controls. But some critics argue that the steps are slow.
At present, the borders of Britain are under threat. With summer fast approaching the government is worried that the number of people arriving will grow even more.
