Over 1.5 Million Muslim Pilgrims Pray at Mount Arafat During Hajj Peak

The number of 1.5 millions Muslim pilgrims were gathered for a Wednesday gathering at Mount Arafat, the spiritual highest point in the Hajj pilgrimage. It is located to the to the southeast of Mecca the holy location holds significant significance because it is the site in which Prophet Muhammad delivered his last sermon, which was delivered over 1,400 years ago.

The day, also referred to by the name of Day of Arafah, is one of the most significant days in the Hajj. Pilgrims were in prayer and reflection beneath the scorching sun, begging for mercy and forgiveness. This action, referred to as wuquf, also known as “standing before God,” is the central part during the Hajj.

In the early morning, pilgrims were already to arrive, many in white, basic clothing. Many wore umbrellas to protect themselves from the heat, which soared up to 41 degrees Celsius (106degF). In order to help people, the authorities offered additional misting fans, and the shaded areas were increased by 50,000 square metres.

Pilgrims were also instructed to sleep on tents throughout the most arid time of the day in order to avoid burning out or suffering from heatstroke. Despite the severe conditions, spirits were high.

At sunset, the pilgrims be taken to Muzdalifah in order to take small stones. They will use them for the next part of the journey -the symbolic stoning of Devil in Mina.

This Day of Arafah is not solely for pilgrims, but it is also important for Muslims across the globe. People who are not participating in Hajj usually observe a fast on this day, believing that it will bring spiritual blessings and forgiveness.

Many pilgrims said the experience was humbling. “This is a moment I’ve prayed for all my life,” one of the pilgrims said. “To be here asking God for mercy, with Muslims from every corner of the world, is powerful.”

It’s been a busy year for the Hajj. Hajj continues to draw huge crowds. Many pilgrims are sharing their experiences via smartphones and social media and focusing on the spiritual significance the journey.

The Hajj will continue to be celebrated with important rituals over the next few days and will include celebrations of the Eid al-Adha festival, which is the day that marks the conclusion of the Hajj and is celebrated by Muslims across the globe.
