A family in Nnewi, Anambra State, has raised alarm after a local vigilante group reportedly detained a pregnant woman, her husband, and their two young children for over 20 days without formal charges.

The victims—Daniel Ikwo, his wife Cynthia (who is heavily pregnant), and their children Chizaram (4) and Chidiogo (2)—were allegedly picked up from their home around 5:00 a.m. on May 30 and taken to the Udogachi vigilante base in Nnewi.

According to a petition filed by the family’s legal representative, the prolonged detention is not only illegal but also poses serious risks to the health and safety of the pregnant woman and her kids. Cynthia has reportedly missed key antenatal checkups, including blood tests and ultrasound scans.

The family was able to briefly see Cynthia and the children on June 18, but no one has seen Daniel since the day of the arrest. On June 19, when the lawyer returned with police officers to secure their release, access was again denied.

The petition described the treatment as a violation of their basic human rights. It called on authorities to launch an urgent investigation and secure their immediate release.

When contacted, a police spokesperson said the petition would be forwarded to the local vigilante leadership for a response. Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner for Information advised the family to take the matter to court for redress.

So far, the reason for the family’s arrest remains unclear. Relatives say they are still in the dark about any accusations or evidence against them. They are especially worried about the health of the pregnant mother and the trauma the children may be facing in custody.
