A 71-year-old Nigerian woman Janet Olufunke Damiro, was dismissed from her position as cleaner at a college located in the United Kingdom after being accused of stealing a bracelet.

Janet was employed at the University for 13 years with no incident of or misconduct. According to her story she stumbled across a bracelet during her work and intended to return it, but did not. The item was later returned when she remembered but, at that point the university was already intervened.

Despite her honesty and lengthy service, she was dismissed because of “breach of trust.” This decision stunned many who think that it was harsh, particularly when you consider her age, employment history as well as the fact that her bracelet was returned involuntarily.

The family and friends of Janet have criticized the incident as unfair. They claim that Janet’s decades of loyalty and a clean history should have been taken into account.

They have begun an appeal process that asks that the college reconsider its decision, and insisting on fair treatment for elderly employees or ethnic minorities. A few have emphasized the need for improved communication and support systems before jumping to drastic disciplinary measures.

Janet’s story is getting the attention of many online and many have expressed their support and requesting her to be reinstated.
