Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has reported receiving threats to his life and family after delivering a New Year message that criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Obi’s address, titled “Nigeria Needs Selfless and Exemplary Leadership,” highlighted escalating economic and security challenges, urging decisive action to alleviate citizens’ suffering.

In response, the All Progressives Congress (APC), through its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, accused Obi of hypocrisy and attempting to incite public outrage against the government. Morka described Obi’s remarks as “misleading” and aimed at scoring “cheap political points.”

Obi, however, stood by his New Year message, insisting that it was made in good faith and calling for constructive feedback. He expressed concern over the threats, viewing them as attempts to silence critical voices in Nigeria. Obi stated, “If I have truly crossed the line, I invite anyone to point it out, as I remain committed to upholding decorum. However, I will not be silenced in my resolve to speak truthfully, especially as our nation continues to drift toward undemocratic practices.”

This development underscores the heightened tensions between opposition figures and the current administration, raising concerns about freedom of expression and the safety of political dissenters in Nigeria.
