In a deeply personal and public dispute, Omowunmi, the widow of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, has accused her father-in-law, Joseph Aloba, of evading a DNA test intended to confirm the paternity of her son.
The controversy began when Joseph Aloba filed a suit requesting a DNA test for his grandson. On July 9, 2024, the Magistrates Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, advised both parties to seek an alternative resolution. Despite private negotiations, no agreement was reached.
In October 2024, the family’s legal representative, Monisola Odumosu, announced that Omowunmi had agreed to the DNA test, and both sides were drafting settlement terms. The court later ordered the test to be conducted at a mutually agreed-upon medical facility in Nigeria, appointing officers to oversee the process to ensure its integrity.
However, correspondence from Omowunmi’s legal team, dated January 9, 2025, revealed disagreements over the choice of medical facilities. Omowunmi rejected the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, proposed by Joseph Aloba, citing concerns raised during court proceedings. Conversely, Aloba dismissed her suggestion of Lagoon Hospitals without providing substantial reasons. In an effort to demonstrate transparency, Omowunmi proposed two alternative hospitals—The Eko Hospital and Reddington Hospitals—in a letter dated December 11, 2024, but received no response.
Adding to the tension, Omowunmi expressed dismay over public statements made by Aloba’s legal counsel, accusing her of reluctance to proceed with the DNA test. She also lamented defamatory remarks made by her father-in-law on social media, which she believes have unjustly tarnished her reputation and that of her son.
This familial conflict has attracted significant public attention, with supporters of both parties expressing concern over the impact on the child’s well-being. As the situation unfolds, many hope for a resolution that prioritizes the best interests of the child and fosters healing within the family.
