Pastor Enoch Adeboye, leader of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has called for the release of TikTok user Olumide Ogunsanwo, known as SeaKing, who was arrested for criticizing him online. Adeboye stated he was unaware of the arrest and distanced himself from the group responsible.
In December 2024, SeaKing posted a TikTok video criticizing Adeboye’s call for a 100-day fast, calling it “stupid.” This led the Concerned Christian Youth Forum to petition the Lagos State Police Command, resulting in SeaKing’s arrest.
In a recent video, Adeboye clarified he had no role in the arrest and did not know those responsible. He said, “I heard that there was someone who lambasted me thoroughly because I asked my people to fast for 100 days. I didn’t ask him. I didn’t even ask anybody who is not a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to fast—only my children. But God said that it would happen. I was told that some people got so angry, and they went and arrested the fellow. Haaa! Release him. He is fulfilling prophecy.”
James Adama, leader of the Concerned Christian Youth Forum, admitted the group was behind SeaKing’s arrest, citing concerns over cyber harassment against respected religious leaders.
Deji Adeyanju, one of SeaKing’s legal representatives, praised Adeboye’s call for release and indicated potential legal action against the group responsible for the arrest. He questioned the legal standing of the group to file the petition.
The situation highlights tensions between freedom of expression and respect for religious figures in Nigeria. Adeboye’s call for SeaKing’s release has been seen as a move to de-escalate the situation.
