The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has successfully intercepted 13 Nigerian women at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. These women were being trafficked to Iraq under the guise of securing employment.
The victims, all young women, were lured with promises of lucrative jobs in the Middle East. Upon arrival at the airport, NAPTIP officials, acting on intelligence reports, identified and rescued them before they could board their flight.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the traffickers had obtained travel documents and visas for the victims through fraudulent means. The women were unaware of the dangers awaiting them, including forced labor and exploitation.
NAPTIP has commenced a thorough investigation to apprehend the syndicate responsible for this trafficking attempt. The agency urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to human trafficking.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in combating human trafficking in Nigeria. NAPTIP continues to intensify efforts to prevent such occurrences and protect vulnerable citizens from falling prey to traffickers.
