Nigerian pastor and televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been rearrested in South Africa for alleged violations of immigration laws.

The arrest took place early Saturday morning in East London, Eastern Cape, shortly after he finished a church service. He was taken into custody by officials from the Department of Home Affairs, supported by the South African Police Service’s tactical teams.

This development comes just weeks after Omotoso was acquitted of multiple charges, including rape, human trafficking, and racketeering. His acquittal was based on the court’s ruling that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The ruling sparked strong public reactions across South Africa, with many questioning the legal system and calling for stricter oversight of foreign religious leaders.

Following his rearrest, Omotoso was transferred to Mdantsane police station, where he is currently being held. He is expected to appear in court on Monday to face charges under the country’s Immigration Act.

Officials say the arrest is strictly tied to visa and residency violations, unrelated to the earlier criminal case. However, the timing has stirred renewed interest and debate about his activities and status in South Africa.

The case continues to draw attention due to Omotoso’s high profile and the nature of previous allegations that kept him in the public eye for several years.
