National Assembly leaders have gone public in their endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to run for re-election in the forthcoming 2027 presidential election.

They gave the endorsement on Wednesday, May 22, 2025, during the special joint National Assembly sitting as part of commemoration on the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s democracy.

In the voice of the legislators, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the leadership of President Tinubu, stating that his first year in office has registered clear efforts at re-engineering the economy of Nigeria and restoring the confidence of the world in the country. Akpabio described the president’s effort as dedicated and mission-driven.

He also commended Tinubu’s audacity in ending fuel subsidies and tackling long-standing structural problems which previous governments avoided. In Akpabio’s view, these actions—though painful—show Tinubu’s commitment to reform and nation-building.

House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, said the same. He said that the National Assembly is a hundred percent supportive of Tinubu and wished the president would attempt another term in 2027 to continue his reforms.

President Tinubu, in turn, thanked the lawmakers for their help. President Tinubu also reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to creating jobs, improving security, and growing the economy. He declared, “We are only just starting. There’s still more work to do, and we will get it done.”

This early endorsement by the National Assembly is an excellent sign of political endorsement. Despite the fact that the 2027 election is years away, the exhibition of support promises a likely re-election bid by President Tinubu.
