Russian Presidency Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is ready to start negotiations for peace over the current conflict in Ukraine. However, Ukraine remains firm–no deal unless Russian troops leave Ukrainian territory.

Putin’s latest remarks suggest that Russia might be looking to resolve the conflict diplomatically however, no formal measures have been made. Ukraine is led by the president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made it clear that any talks must contain the complete Russian withdrawal as well as respect for Ukraine’s borders.

Zelenskyy has also called for greater international backing, particularly by Western nations. He stated that Ukraine will not sign any deal that allows for the loss of the land or permits Russia to retain the occupied territories under its control.

The war has gone on for two years with a number of dead and millions of people displaced. Russia retains control of parts the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine which includes areas such as Donetsk as well as Crimea.

Numerous countries have attempted to be mediators for peace. China, Turkey, and even the Vatican have provided assistance in bringing both sides to the table. But the pace of progress is still slow and war persists on the field.

Within the U.S., former President Donald Trump has said he would end the war swiftly when he is reelected. Trump says he will bring both leaders to directly negotiate. However, critics argue that the plan does not have enough detail and could not be realistic.

In the meantime, European leaders are urging caution. They are worried that any speedy peace talks could be favourable to Russia should Ukraine does not get the entirety of its land. NATO leaders have pledged to provide financial and military assistance to Ukraine.

The battle on the front lines is ongoing in areas like Kharkiv as well as Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine continues to defend its cities and retaliating whenever it is possible, even though the winter weather makes combat difficult.

Despite increasing requests for peace the two sides remain stuck in a standoff. Russia is seeking recognition of its claims to land. Ukraine is seeking the foreign troops out. If those demands don’t change the peace is still unattainable.
