The former Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has appealed to participants from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to adopt a high-minded approach in the political debate by opposing government officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by presenting facts instead of engaging in personal criticisms.

In his remarks at the time of his arrival in Lagos, Aregbesola, who was recently named interim national secretary for the ADC The ADC, stressed the need for a based opposition. He urged ADC supporters to focus their criticisms on the daily struggles Nigerians confront, such as the increasing cost of food, the inflation and increasing poverty instead of relying on inflammatory words.

He believes that the real test of leadership in whether the citizens are in better financial position than they were prior to. He advised opposition leaders as well as their supporters to base their arguments with evidence and economic reality that resonates with the people, arguing that emotional responses or personal insults will not convince voters to vote.

Aregbesola’s emergence into the ADC is a major political shift. He had previously been a prominent figure within the APC. The move comes after internal conflicts and eventual rifts with power-sharing factions in the APC’s ruling coalition, especially within his own state, Osun. As part of a broader coalition seeking to take down the presidency of Tinubu by 2027. Aregbesola will present his ADC as an exemplary and determined alternative to Tinubu’s administration.

But, not everyone in the ADC are on the same page. A few members have expressed dissatisfaction about his appointment, posing questions about the legitimacy of his appointment and claiming that the correct procedures were not observed. Despite the criticism, Aregbesola appears focused on taking the party towards an enlightened, fact-based opposition prior to elections to the general next year.
