An innocent invite turned into a living nightmare that could not be undone. In 2022, Segun “Michael” Ogundipe, a 33-year-old Nigerian university student in the UK, met a woman at her place of employment and asked her out for a drink. She accepted, clearly indicating before going out that she only wanted to get to know him.
In the night, he took her out and they went to a bar. Throughout the night, he began steering the conversation towards unwanted territory. Later, he promised to take her somewhere else but pulled up at his residence as he was to grab something. When the woman excused herself to go to the restroom, the following moments violated the trust: he raped and assaulted her.
The attack did not end there. He drove her to another location, still trying to make unwanted advances. The police, noticing his reckless driving, pulled the car over. The woman seized the chance to escape and reported the attack to the police.
Ogundipe was found guilty of rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration at trial. He had pleaded not guilty, claiming consent, but the jury disagreed. In July 2025, he was sentenced to five years in prison by a UK court. As a foreigner who came in to study in 2021, he is to be deported after completing the jail term.
