A shocking act of arson has rocked Boki Local Government Area in northern Cross River State, as unknown individuals set fire to St Mary Quasi Parish Catholic Church in Katchuan Irruan in the early hours of Thursday, around 3 a.m.
The attack has left residents and church officials in disbelief, as the motives and identities of the perpetrators remain unknown. Witnesses reported that the assailants forcibly entered the church premises before setting parts of the building ablaze.
What Was Destroyed?
An unsigned statement from the church revealed significant damage to the Sacrament area and sacred items, including sections of the altar. Additionally, vehicles belonging to the parish priest, specifically a Lexus RX 350 and a Toyota Corolla, were also torched within the church compound.
Emergency responders were contacted promptly, and local efforts were made to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.
Police Response and Investigation
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident and launched a manhunt for the attackers. ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, Police Public Relations Officer, noted that church records stored in the sacristy were destroyed in the blaze.
“No arrests have been made at this time. The case has been formally recorded and transferred to Okundi Police Station for discreet investigation. Updates will be provided as the probe progresses,” ASP Akata stated.
