The Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ikorodu has taken a significant step in resolving lingering questions surrounding the late singer Mohbad’s family, approving DNA testing abroad to confirm the paternity of his son, Liam.
What Happened?
Following a court session, Oladayo Ogungbe, counsel to Mohbad’s father, announced that the court approved three laboratories for the DNA test: one in the United States and two in the United Kingdom.
Each party involved—Mohbad’s father and widow Wunmi—chose a laboratory, while the court appointed an independent lab to ensure transparency. The DNA test is intended to establish Liam’s paternity officially, addressing family and legal concerns that have persisted since the singer’s death in September 2023.
Why the DNA Test Matters
Mohbad’s death left questions about family rights and inheritance unresolved. The DNA test will provide legal confirmation of Liam’s parentage, ensuring that his rights are recognized and protecting him from potential disputes over guardianship or inheritance.
“One from us, one from them, and the court picked an independent one,” Ogungbe explained, emphasizing fairness and impartiality in the process.
How the Process Will Work
The court has scheduled the collection of DNA samples for April 7, 2026, which will be monitored by welfare officers to maintain integrity and prevent interference. All parties will be present during the process, ensuring transparency and trust in the results.
Once completed, the DNA test will provide a definitive answer regarding Liam’s paternity, settling legal matters and bringing closure to the family. Observers say the decision demonstrates the court’s commitment to fairness and due process, even in sensitive family disputes involving high-profile figures.
