In a celebration of academic prowess that highlights the global potential of young Nigerians, 17-year-old Nafisa Abdullah Aminu has been recognized for her outstanding achievement in English language skills. Emerging victorious at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London, Nafisa claimed the title of the world’s best in her category, a feat that has now earned her national acclaim and a financial reward from the federal government.
The honor came during a special ceremony in Abuja, where the Minister of Education presented Nafisa with a cheque for N200,000. This gesture underscores the government’s dedication to fostering excellence among students, acknowledging not just individual success but also the broader impact on Nigeria’s educational landscape. Attending the event were key figures including the Minister of State for Education, the Yobe State Commissioner for Basic Education, senior ministry officials, and representatives from Yobe’s education sector, along with five other winners from the international competition.
During the proceedings, the minister praised Nafisa’s accomplishment as a clear demonstration of the intelligence and determination inherent in Nigerian youth. He emphasized how such international recognition calls for continued support in education, including scholarships, mentorship initiatives, and enhanced access to quality resources. The government, he affirmed, is steadfast in its efforts to encourage students to strive for greatness through commitment and focus, with Nafisa’s story serving as a powerful motivator for her peers across the country.
The Yobe State Commissioner for Basic Education echoed these sentiments, referring to Nafisa and her fellow competitors as symbols of strength and perseverance. He described their triumphs as victories not only for themselves but for a region that has overcome significant challenges, including years of conflict, to rebuild its educational framework. He pointed to recent advancements in Yobe, such as the successful graduation of 171 medical students sponsored to study in India, who are now contributing to local healthcare. Additionally, the state has elevated its colleges of education, agriculture, and business studies to bolster teaching, research, and professional training.
Nafisa, in her response, conveyed deep appreciation to her parents, educators, and the Nigerian authorities for their unwavering support. She committed to leveraging her newfound platform to encourage other young people, stressing the importance of diligence, endurance, and self-belief in achieving global competitiveness. As part of her ongoing efforts, she introduced a new initiative called English Language for Peace and Development, designed to enhance literacy, promote dialogue, and foster unity among youth. This project reflects her vision of using language as a tool for positive societal change, extending the influence of her award beyond personal recognition.
