President Bola Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, as a heartfelt tribute to the late former president who passed away on July 13, 2025. The announcement was made during a Federal Executive Council session in Abuja held in Buhari’s honor.
Addressing cabinet members, Tinubu described Buhari as a man of discipline, honor, and unwavering patriotism. He noted that the former leader remained steadfast in his principles, untouched by the lure of power or the praise of the public. According to Tinubu, Buhari led with moral clarity and an uncommon integrity, shaping Nigeria’s democracy in a way that few others have.
The renaming holds deep significance for the northeastern region. The University of Maiduguri sits in a zone that has experienced some of the harshest effects of insurgency.
