The United States is moving ahead with deportations of Iranian migrants despite ongoing unrest in Iran, raising questions about human rights, foreign policy, and political messaging.
According to an Iranian-American advocacy group, the administration of former US President Donald Trump plans to resume deportation flights to Iran even as the country continues to recover from violent protests that left thousands dead.

The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) says it has learned that the US government is restarting deportation flights to Iran. If carried out, these would be the first such flights since mass protests swept across Iran and were forcefully suppressed earlier this year.
NIAC reports that deportations had previously taken place in September and December, but the renewed removals come at a time when Iran remains politically tense and unstable.
Iranian officials have confirmed the plan. Abolfazl Mehrabadi, a diplomat representing Tehran’s interests in the US, told Iran’s state news agency that about 40 Iranian nationals were scheduled to be deported from Phoenix, Arizona.
Why the Decision Is Controversial
The decision has drawn criticism because it appears to contradict earlier signals from Washington. During the height of Iran’s crackdown on protesters, President Trump publicly threatened military action against Tehran and suggested that the US stood with Iranians facing repression.
However, those threats were later softened after Trump said Iranian authorities had suspended planned executions. The restart of deportations has now been seen by critics as a sharp reversal in tone.
NIAC president Jamal Abdi described the move as dangerous, arguing that the same administration that expressed solidarity with Iranian protesters is now sending people back into a country many fear is still unsafe.

One of the most sensitive aspects of the deportations involves vulnerable individuals. The American Immigration Council says two of the deportees are gay men who could face execution in Iran, where homosexuality is punishable by death.
The two men are currently being held in an immigration detention facility in Arizona. Legal efforts to stop their deportation are still ongoing, according to the advocacy group.
Human rights organisations warn that returning individuals to countries where they may face persecution violates international protection norms, even when immigration laws are being enforced.
