A new round of kidnappings suspected in the Dass Local Government Area of Bauchi State has sparked alarm following news reports of four persons were kidnapped and one was murdered in separate attacks during the last two weeks.

The incident was made public via Maryam Bagel who was a former member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly and a House of Representatives aspirant, who stated that security concerns appear back to areas which previously enjoyed some peace.

What has happened?

Based on Maryam Bagel the suspected kidnappers were responsible for an array of attacks on the Kagadama as well as Bagel communities within the Dass Local Government Area.

She said that the first victim was a chemist owner who was located in Kagadama who was abducted by gunmen. The kidnappers are said to have requested 50 million naira as ransom in exchange for his release.

Bagel claimed that the attack continued for a few days after when the group tried to abduct a second resident, who was identified by the name of Shahibi.

She said Shahibi was adamant about the kidnapping by telling the perpetrators that they should die rather to avoid another kidnapping, after being allegedly kidnapped around one year prior. The gunmen were said to have fired multiple shots at him in the stomach and chest before he passed away due to his wounds.

Bagel further claimed that the attackers reappear on Tuesday, abducting a second owner of the shop. While the target was able to escape the scene, the gunmen were allegedly able to kidnap 3 other people as well, including the 10 year old boy and a man who was just returning from hospital, and a third resident.

Bagel stated that the situation is an increasing security risk and said urgent intervention is required to stop criminals from gaining momentum in the region.

She also raised questions about the N50 million ransom request and argued that it would be difficult to a community chemist collect such a large sum.
